What Is 10DLC Registration? A Plain-English Guide

If your business texts recently stopped arriving, the reason is almost always the same: your numbers are not registered. 10DLC registration is how US carriers decide whether a message from a 10-digit number is legitimate business traffic or spam — and since the rules tightened, unregistered messages are blocked rather than merely delayed.

"10DLC" just means 10-digit long code: an ordinary local number. "A2P" means application-to-person — any message your software sends to a customer. Put together, A2P 10DLC is the framework for business texting from normal numbers, and registration is the price of entry.

The three-step 10DLC registration flow: register brand, file campaign, attach numbers

Fig 1 — Registration is two mandatory layers, filed in order.

The two layers you register

Registration is not one step. It is two, and they must be filed in order:

  • Brand — your legal business, verified against your EIN. This proves who is sending.
  • Campaign — the specific use case you send, with real sample messages and your opt-in flow. This proves why.

Both are submitted to The Campaign Registry (TCR) through your SMS platform. You never deal with TCR directly, which is why the filing experience your provider offers matters more than most people expect.

Why the brand comes first

The brand filing generates a trust score, and that score does two things: it gates campaign approval, and it sets your throughput — how fast you may send. A weak brand filing does not just risk rejection; it quietly throttles every campaign underneath it.

The most common brand-filing failure is trivial and avoidable: the business name you enter does not exactly match your IRS record. A trading name, an abbreviation, a missing "LLC" — any mismatch can fail vetting.

Before you file: pull up your EIN confirmation letter and copy the legal name character for character. This single step prevents the majority of first-attempt rejections.

What this means for you

If you are just starting, budget about a week end to end: one to three days for brand vetting, then often same-day campaign approval. If you are already sending and hitting problems, check your brand status first — a delivery collapse almost always traces back to a registration gap, not a content problem.
